George Marten
LSE Fellow in Economic History
Welcome to my website. Have a look around!
Research Summary
- I study the century following the First Industrial Revolution.
- Focused on the New Poor Law, friendly societies (mutual insurance), co-operative production, and microfinance: broadly speaking, historical approaches to pooling risk.
- I recently digitised Friendly Society Returns to Parliament 1855-1880.
My Approach
I am interested in documenting lessons from British and Irish economic history via a careful application of historical narrative and econometrics (statistical economic techniques). History allows us to enrich modern empirical methods when studying formative historical episodes!
